Aamir Khan took inspiration from RGV for this move?
on Jul 30, 2025

Aamir Khan has launched his own YouTube channel, Aamir Khan Talkies, in March of this year and has 3 lakh subscribers, already. Now, at Mumbai, Aamir Khan announced that he is going to release his movies on his channel, in pay-per-view model. He announced that his recent release, Sitaare Zameen Par, will release in this model.
Several years ago, Ram Gopal Varma, RGV, announced the similar model for his movies with his own OTT platform. He stated that this is the way, indie filmmaking can develop in India with budgets in control. Due to the low quality and B-Grade filmmaking, his plans have failed and been sidelined. But Aamir Khan brought it back into picture.
He stated that in his younger days, people used to watch movies at home as a family. He stated that rather than the Rs.125 crores offered by OTT platforms, Rs.100 spent by audiences to watch his films, is more important to him. With a ripe smile on his face, he stated that he had been thinking about this move from a long time.
He further said, "After Sitaare, films like Lagaan (2001), Taare Zameen Par (2007) and Peepli Live (2010) will be available on the channel. Some timeless classics produced or associated with my father (late filmmaker Tahir Hussain) such as Caravan (1971) and Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke (1993) will also be available, to offer a rare blend of nostalgia and cinematic heritage.”
Aamir Khan stated that he took this step to help young filmmakers as they would take a nominal fee from the earnings and give it to the filmmakers. He further stated that after theatrical window of his films and people who associate with his production will reap fruits from releasing on his digital YouTube channel.
While he is confident that people will welcome his move, producers are worried that other actors might also follow such steps. They are hoping for big deals from OTT platforms but this kind of pay-per-view model, if succeeds, then could turn out to be a hassle for them to pay off huge remunerations.
Some are worried that OTT platforms might be upset by this move and take a decision to soft boycott films of stars who might also take such steps going forward. In any case, RGV announced that this is the future long time back and Aamir Khan seems to be following it now.
